What is a hibachi grill?
A traditional Japanese charcoal grill designed for tabletop or small outdoor cooking. Made from diatomite (ceramic earth) or cast iron, hibachi grills retain heat exceptionally well and are ideal for binchotan charcoal cooking, think yakitori, yakiniku, and seafood grilling.
Hibachi vs konro: what's the difference?
'Hibachi' is a broad term for Japanese charcoal grills; 'konro' specifically means a diatomite box-style grill designed for binchotan. All konros are hibachis, but not all hibachis are konros. Konros are the most popular format sold today.
What's the best charcoal for a hibachi grill?
Binchotan (white charcoal) is the gold standard, long burn, low smoke, high heat, ideal for Japanese grilling. Our binchotan charcoal range is matched to our grills.
Can I use a hibachi grill indoors?
Only in a space with proper ventilation (rangehood, open window) and never on flammable surfaces. Konro-style diatomite grills contain the heat on top but radiate heat downward, always use a trivet. Outdoor use is safer.
What size hibachi should I get?
Small grills (2-4 people) suit solo or couple cooking. Medium (4-8 people) is the home-dinner sweet spot. Large (8+ people) suits gatherings and party cooking. Wide formats fit longer skewers.
