Matsubara Hamono White 1 Kurouchi Petty 150mm
Matsubara knives left us with a huge smile on our face when we opened them for the first time! They originate from Nagasaki, and the business is headed by Tanaka Kama Kogyo. The story of Matsubara Hamono is about as fascinating as is gets. He is a 4th generation blacksmith, and has been making knives for over 20 years.
The history of Matsubara blades can be traced back to the Battle of Dan-no-ura of 1185. After the battle, Naminohira Yukiyasu, a master blacksmith of the defeated Taira Clan, fled from the victorious Minamoto Clan and went into hiding in the Province of Hyuga (today's Miyazaki). When demand for swords soared during the Warring States Period, his descendants moved to Matsubara in 1474. They forged swords on the grounds of Hachiman Shrine and, at the request of local farmers, started to make crescent-shaped sickles. This is the beginning of Matsubara sickles.
These skills were inherited by the Ito family, hereditary officials of Hachiman Shrine. Many craftsmen learned these skills and Matsubara sickles spread throughout the land. Today, Matsubara knives are a representation of this rich history, and the quality and finish of the knives is truly remarkable. Rounded and polished spines and choils feature throughout the range.
We hope you enjoy these fantastic knives as much as we have!
White Steel is the purest of the Japanese High Carbon Steels made by Hitachi Metals. It can be forged to extremely high hardness, sharpened extremely easily (even for novices), and takes a scalpel like edge. It is known to be one of the easiest steel to get blazing sharp.
Being this pure and lacking any stainless properties, this steel is very reactive and will rust quickly if not dried after use, and oiled between uses. However, once a patina builds up, it is less reactive and prone to rusting. Knives of this steel are regarded by many as the purists choice of knife, and are incredibly rewarding to use if maintained properly.
