Mackerel has always been plentiful in Portuguese waters, and it's a regular on tables there for good reason. These fillets are caught in the North East Atlantic and packed in olive oil, which keeps them moist and lets that savoury flavour do the talking.

If sardines feel like a step too far, start here. Being fillets, there's less to pick through, just clean pieces of fish. Flake them through a potato salad with mustard and dill, pile them onto rye with pickled onions, or fold them into an omelette. Mackerel is also one of the best fish going for omega-3s, which never hurts.
