Nemoto Glass (根本硝子工芸)
Founded by Yukio Nemoto (根本幸雄), Nemoto Glass is a family workshop devoted to the craft of Edo Kiriko cut glass. From its beginning, the focus has been on careful workmanship and precise hand polishing. Yukio believed that quality came from time and attention, not shortcuts, and that every piece should speak for itself through its clarity and finish.
That belief in steady, honest craft has guided the family for three generations—Yukio, his son Tatsuya (根本達也), and now his grandson Kosho (根本幸昇). Each has continued the work with quiet dedication, preserving the spirit of the workshop while refining its methods for the present day.
Today, Nemoto Glass remains true to its origins, creating Edo Kiriko that balances tradition with a calm, modern sensibility.
About Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)
Edo Kiriko began in 1834 when glass merchant Kaga-ya Kyūbei of Edo first engraved patterns on glass. As Western techniques arrived during the Meiji era, Japanese artisans blended these new influences with their own, forming the distinctive style known today. Edo Kiriko is now officially recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry as a Traditional Craft.
Craft and Finish
The beauty of Edo Kiriko lies in its precision and light. Each line is cut by hand, then polished until the glass reveals a soft brilliance. The process is slow, but it is what gives every piece its quiet presence and sense of depth.
