Born in 1946, he has spent a working lifetime at the forge, and the standing he holds there is not the sort that gets handed out easily.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe is best known for Honyaki, which most people in the trade would call the hardest thing a Japanese knife smith can attempt. A Honyaki blade is forged from a single piece of high carbon steel and differentially hardened, so the edge comes out glass hard while the spine stays soft enough to survive. Get the quench wrong and the blade cracks, warps, or simply fails. There is no fixing it and no hiding it. The failure rate is why so few smiths bother and why the ones who can do it consistently are known by name.
